The Coast Guard has discovered a great photo we haven't seen before. It shows the entrance to their World's Fair pavilion, which is the same one that ws auctioned off, carted upstate, and eventually repurposed as a summer cabin. It's full of great detail and you can see one of the other pavilions in the background. Click here to view it in high resolution.

Here's a first, at least for us: photos showing early design models of the structures. They were taken in 1962 and published in a World's Fair Progress Report dated Jan. 24, 1963. The captions indicate that Peter Schladermundt's early concept for the structures — and for the World's Fair Marina as a whole — was significantly different from how things eventually turned out. It isn't clear whether this was due to a change in creative direction on Schladermundt's part or more banal factors like budgetary constraints.

The folks at the Parks Department had assured us that they'd update the badly erroneous sign near the structures. That was more than a year ago, but nothing ever happened (big surprise). So we recently decided to take matters into our own hands. Much better now.

We've just learned about a fantastic 1966 research paper about the design, manufacture, and assembly of the Candela Structures and two other attractions at the 1964 World's Fair. If only we'd known about this paper when we were creating the exhibit! The portion about the Candela Structures (referred to in the paper as "Marina Structures") begins near the bottom of the eighth page.
